President of Barbados, Her Excellency The Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason, paid a special visit to centenarian Carnetta Carrington yesterday, as she celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends.

Mrs. Carrington, who is known for her sharp memory and unwavering faith, marked the milestone at her residence in Warners, Christ Church, where the President commended her significant contribution to the nation’s social and cultural foundation.

President Mason noted that Barbados’ centenarians “built not only their families’ foundation, but the Barbadian foundation,” emphasising that their sacrifices and resilience shaped the improved living standards enjoyed today.

She reminded younger generations that many comforts now taken for granted, including secure housing, were hard-won through the perseverance of elders like Mrs. Carrington.

She also extended warm congratulations, stating that she was pleased to share in the occasion and encouraged Mrs. Carrington to fully enjoy her day.

“Whatever you do today, remind your sons and your daughter that today is your day. This is the day the Lord has made; rejoice and be glad in it,” she told the centenarian.

Mrs. Carrington was married for over half a century to her late husband Chester. Their union produced six children – five boys and one girl. She credits her faith in God for being integral to her reaching this milestone.

Her son, Mitch Carrington, described his mother’s life as a blessing, expressing gratitude that she has lived to see 100 years while still able to recognise all her children and grandchildren.

“It’s indeed a tremendous privilege just to have her alive at 100, and not only to be alive, but to know every one of her children,” he said.

Mr. Carrington added that the family was honoured by the President’s visit, calling it “a big deal” and a memorable highlight of the celebration.

Mrs. Carrington will continue her birthday celebrations this weekend with a special service at the Advent Avenue Seventh-Day Adventist Church on Saturday, and a special event with family and friends on Sunday.
