Osbourne Downes affectionately called “Glester” was born at Cleavers Hill New Road, now St. Elizabeth New Road, St. Joseph.

He was a sugar worker at heart.  Not only did Osbourne work long hours in sugar factories, he also enjoyed planting sugar cane.  When he left the sugar cane fields, he worked as a Postman for many years at the St. Joseph Post Office, which was then located at the Dispensary before it  moved to the bottom of Horse Hill.

Mr. Downes lived alone but was the father of four children.  He lived an active life and up until the age of 103, he still worked a portion of land behind his home.  He planted green peas, pumpkin, sorrel and ground provisions.
